Downtown Development - Joe Yates, Chamber Vice Chair – Downtown Development

VISION: Main Street Dyersburg will once again be the heart of the community by incorporating mixed uses that integrate residential, office, retail, entertainment, dining, cultural and civic activities, while preserving the historic architecture and feel of the past.

MISSION: Main Street Dyersburg stimulates interest in the history and heritage of the historic downtown district while promoting its revitalization as a destination for commercial and cultural activity.

GOAL: Create a sense of place in downtown Dyersburg by using the master design plan and other resources to promote downtown as a place to live, work, shop and play.

  • Renewed emphasis upon revenue generated by Main Street memberships and sponsorships, as well as delivery of services for these investments.

  • Continue to support the Southtown Riverpark HUD grant project (Farmers’ Market, Walking Trail, Splash Park, Dog Park, etc.). Pursue related trail opportunities that provide additional access to the Forked Deer river from the downtown square.

  • Emphasize more “foot traffic” downtown, especially nights, weekends, and through special events (these could include existing, new and merged events). Find opportunities to partner with other entities.

  • Renew efforts enabling buyers and tenants to fill empty downtown properties. These include the maintenance of a building inventory and designation of a “Favorite Five” at all times.

  • Continue to work with local governments on continuous improvements, including advocacy for relief from blue laws and streamlining of permitting processes for businesses. This is especially meant to assist microbreweries, restaurants with live entertainment, and upper-floor housing.

  • Continue progress on administrative matters affecting Main Street, especially editing and adherence to by-laws and other national, state, and local best practices.

  • Other priorities listed as current discussion items include parking, free downtown WIFI, Plaza on Main, walls and heat for the Farmer’s Market building, signage, and partnering with the Adult Leadership program on a long-term mural project.
