Dyersburg, TN ? WDIA radio talk show host Bev Johnson will deliver the keynote address at the annual Ida Mae Theus-Mays Memorial Scholarship and Graduate Honor banquet. The event will be held at the Lannom Center in Dyersburg on Saturday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Johnson has worked in the broadcast industry for 34 years. For 26 of these years, Johnson has been a familiar voice on WDIA-AM radio; and for 23 years of those years she has hosted "The Bev Johnson Show. She provides her listeners with uplifting, no-nonsense opinions and advice.
WDIA-AM, located in Memphis, was the first radio station in the country programmed by African-Americans for African-Americans. It has been in operation for 60 years.
As in years past, in addition to a dynamic and inspirational speaker, the evening will present a full and varied program of music, and a complete dinner. Will and Jill Donnell (originally from Dyersburg) of Beyond Me music ministry along with Shea Norman of Memphis and the Sons of Thunder from Dyersburg will provide musical selections. The Sons of David--Frank Shaw III, Reginald Taylor, Caleb Barrett Theus Williams, Larry Jones, Jr., and Kevin Clayborne--will provide music during dinner.
Toast master and mistress for the festivities will be Larry and Pat Williams. Also making remarks and presentations will be Dr. Karen Bowyer, DSCC President, former DSCC Vice President Buck Tarpley, DSCC Vice President for Institutional Advancement Tina Morris, Faith Apostolic Church Pastor Bishop J. Denard Williams, and DSCC retired Associate Professor of Administrative Office Support, now Faculty Emeritus/Title III Activity Director, Emma Mays-Reynolds. Banquet Co-Coordinator Dr. Darnishia R. Williams will recognize the Faith Deliverance Apostolic Church 2010 graduates.
The event and scholarship are a celebration of the memory of a devout believer and supporter
of education and founder of Faith Deliverance Apostolic Church, Ida Mae Theus-Mays, This scholarship fund was established to help provide an education for second-year students at DSCC. Preferably, recipients should be African-American, must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average, must be active in campus life at DSCC, and must be an active member of a Christian-centered church. In coordination with the Financial Aid Office and the financial aid guidelines at Dyersburg, State the trustees of Faith Deliverance Apostolic Church make the selection. The process includes the submission of an application, a letter from the applicant and two reference letters.
